Should I prewash fabric before cutting the template?

Yes please! Prewashing the fabric on high heat and drying on high heat before cutting greatly reduces the masks shrinking after completion.

Elastic or fabric ties?

There is no preference with either mask style to have elastic or fabric ties.

What size elastic?

1/8” or 1/4” work best with our mask styles! 3/8” can work as well.

Do I need to sanitize the mask covers before donating?

The front line facilities will sanitize the mask covers. We ask that you prewash the fabric before cutting the template to minimize shrinkage.

How did Sew Masks 4 Cincy decide on these two styles for mask covers?

These two styles were chosen by TriHealth medical professionals out of the many homemade options.

Do the masks need filters?

Both SM4C mask styles have filter pockets for removable filters. We do not provide filter material for front line facilities.

Can the mask covers have metal nose wires in them?

Both SM4C mask styles have casings for removable nose wires. We do not provide nose wires. We highly recommend removing the nose wire before washing! Easily accessible nose wires include pipe cleaners, garden ties, and produce ties.

Where are the masks going?

SM4C has donated over 17,000 masks to front line facilities in the Greater Cincinnati Region including hospitals, police, the City of Cincinnati, nursing homes, hospice, children services, and many more!

How can I help if I don't know how to sew?

We need volunteers to sort and count mask donations! Please complete our volunteer survey if you’d like to help. Sharing the word about Sew Masks 4 Cincy always helps too!
